Staff members from Student Assistance Foundation’s Campus Outreach Offices cover the state to provide resources for students, parents, teachers and counselors on start-to-finish education planning, focusing primarily on how to finance postsecondary education. Presentation topics include:
- Exit/Entrance Counseling — These presentations cover all topics required by the U.S. Department of Education regulations. During entrance and exit counseling, students learn their rights and responsibilities as student loan borrowers, receive explanations of each loan type, get handouts that show repayment amounts and options and learn the consequences of defaulted student loans. Also, they learn valuable information about the National Student Loan Data System (NSLDS), the federal ombudsman’s office and forgiveness programs. (Time — 45 minutes)
- Debt Management — Students learn about saving money, the differences between grants and students loans and how to minimize student loan debt through the use of real life strategies. Other topics include credit cards, savings plans and the value of higher education. (Time — 45-50 minutes)
- MCIS Training — MCIS is an easy, online resource that helps students evaluate their aptitudes and interests. In addition, the program allows students to explore careers and find colleges where they can obtain the education they need. MCIS also provides information on topics including scholarships, financial aid, resumes and interview tips. In addition, separate training can be arranged for teachers and counselors. (Time — variable)
- College Prep Nights — These presentations are the perfect opportunity for parents and students to learn about the steps they need to follow to begin the college search and selection process. In the presentation, audience members learn about the Montana Career Information System (MCIS) and how the system helps with college searches, financial aid, scholarship searches and career exploration. In addition, families receive a brief overview of grants, loans and scholarship. Finally, presenters discuss the admissions process. (Time — 1 hour)
- Know How 2 Go...to College — This student presentation (grades 8 through 12) covers the four main steps to follow when preparing for college. It’s an excellent introduction to the college planning process. (Time — 45 minutes)
